Fresno, CA (April 15, 2010) – Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin has stated that downtown is ready for the large numbers of visitors to the downtown area for the start of the Fresno Grizzlies 2010 home season, beginning on Friday, April 16 at Chukchansi Park.

“Over the next several months, we’ll be welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors to the downtown area for baseball and other events,” Swearengin said. “At the City of Fresno, we’re committed to providing visitors from throughout the area with an enjoyable experience that keeps them coming back again and again.”

The city has taken great effort to ensure that visitors to Chukchansi Park and other events held in downtown will have pleasurable experiences. City workers have been cleaning, repainting, replanting, and doing other activities in order to achieve this goal. Last year’s Grizzlies home games attracted nearly a half million people to the downtown area, and hundreds of thousands more for events and festivals on the Fulton Mall, Eaton Plaza, and the Fresno Convention Center.

“Over 1.3 million people live within a one-hour drive of downtown Fresno and a lot of them come to our city for the kinds of experiences and amenities they can only find here,” Swearengin said. “When they go home, we want them telling their friends and neighbors about the great time they had in downtown Fresno – whether it’s watching a game, eating at a restaurant, visiting a gallery, seeing a show, shopping or doing business.”

Downtown offers plenty of parking, with over 7,900 spaces available in surface lots, garages and curbside. Safety has been enhanced, with the addition of 10 video policing cameras, which brings the total to 23 cameras. An extra nine more are expected to be installed in the next few weeks.
